Talking with trees (part 1)
In the July 2011 issue of Touchstone, an article appeared that seems to be the culmination of woo and pseudo-science. It seems to touch on almost every bad idea. I finally had enough and decided to take this particular article and make an example of it. Below, I've added my comments in red deconstructing the enormous number of logical and factual errors. In this age of scientific reductionism, those of us who talk to trees are deemed strange and alternative: when the trees talk back to us, then we're mad, and simple. Condescension and pity are the labels of the day.
Things, however, are changing. No longer is magic seen as impossible, or as clever tricks organised and performed by such as Derren Brown - the very perpetrators of our condemnation now point the way to true magic.
We CAN speak to trees - and what's more, they can and do react and communicate back! Research has been growing of late, and the view of our planet, solar system, and universe is that it's electrical. And electricity in motion - vibration - produces magnetism. A changing electrical field causes a magnetic field. It does not need to "vibrate". Simply having an increasing electric field will cause a magnetic field. Or simply having a current traveling down a wire will do it. No "vibrations" involved at all. This shows we are also always interconnected, to everything around us, no matter how distant. And that connection is instant, defying time and space. NO. NO. NO. If you are going to talk about light and electromagnetic radiation in general, then know what you are talking about. Electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light, which in a vacuum is c (299,792,458 metres per second). In any other medium, it will travel less than this. There is no instantaneous "connection". Research also shows that trees are affected when we are near them, by the 'waves' or vibrations we produce, both individually and as a society. What research? This is a pretty big claim. Where do you get this?
Beginning with the adage 'as above, so below', let's begin with our sun. It's getting more excited! The Russian scientists, studying the heliosphere boundary (as our solar system spins through space, it interacts with the cosmos and we've come into an area of greater energy) they have discovered that our solar system has created a 'bow wave' of plasma - excited electricity - at its leading edge. This is nothing new. We have known about the heliopause for decades. Also, plasma is not "excited electricity". Plasma is a state of matter where a portion of the elements (or molecules) are ionized. One Russian scientist has postulated the changes thus caused will culminate in an evolutionary change that involves something beyond our recognisable three dimensional world. What does this even mean? You can't simply throw words together like this without explaining what you actually mean. Our sun appears to be an entity which (or who?) gathers electrical energy from space and sends it back out to her planets. No, it does not. In fact, the sun pushes away magnetic fields lines and interstellar plasma and keeps it away from the planets. This is what the heliopause does. This is completely backwards. And with the increasing energy being gathered, the planets are reacting - including us!
Uranus and Neptune have experienced polar shifts while the former has had a large scale growth of magnetosphere intensity. How do you know this? Measuring the magnetosphere of a planet requires actually going there. Who has gone? We have measured the meagnetosphere of Uranus only once with Voyager 2. The same with Neptune. So how do we know that it is increasing? Neptune has changed in light intensity If this is true, so what? The light coming from Neptune is reflected sunlight, so all this means is that Neptune has become more reflective. Interesting, but again, so what?, while Jupiter has doubled its magnetic fields and has produced a column of ionized gasses streaming out to join up with its moon Io. Again, this is completely backwards. Io has volcanoes which spew up vast amounts of material. This material interacts with the powerful magnetic fields around Jupiter and forms a torus around Jupiter. As Io orbits around in this torus, some of this material gets funneled to the polar regions. This is nothing new. Again, the question has to be asked, so what? Auroras have appeared on Saturn No, they have not suddenly appeared. All that has changed is that we now have instruments sensitive enough to see them. Using this reasoning, bacteria didn't exist until we had microscopes sensitive enough to see them. Just because we can now see the aurora does not imply that they didn't exist before. It simply means we could not see them before., and Mars has doubled its atmosphere, causing the Mars probes a problem. I can find no references to back this up at all. Every measurement I've seen shows that Mars is continuing to lose its atmosphere. Venus has experienced significant physical, chemical and optical changes, Over what kind of time scale? All of the planets, and all of the universe for that matter, has seen massive changes. If you are talking about changes over a relatively short time scale, then provide the measurements. and has grown a long tail, The only reference I could find for this refers to Velikovsky. That, in and of itself, kills this claim dead in the water. while our moon has a growing atmosphere. Again, this is nothing new. The atmosphere on the moon is so slight to be nearly a vacuum. And again, SO WHAT? What does this have to do with anything? Mercury is also growing an atmosphere which was said to be impossible. Impossible according to who? It was thought, and still is thought, that Mercury can't hold on to an atmosphere permanently. But it does have a thin atmosphere that is continually replenished by off gassing and sublimation. Does this have repercussions for Astrology? And ourselves?I'm not even touching these questions. As can be seen above, there is absolutely nothing new, so there is nothing to cause any new effects, if they could affect us at all. But that is a secondary question. We've grown a new belt of energy around the planet adding energy to our weather and increasing the electrical activity generally. Energy in what form? And from where? And again, where are the measurements? We have been warned (by NASA and others) to expect a massive discharge of solar energy in the next couple of years which could cause great disruption. I'm going to be generous and assume that you mean a solar storm. This is nothing new. There is an 11-year cycle of sunspot activity that coincides with increased solar storm activity. The only issue is our growing dependence on sensitive electrical devices. These may be damaged by a massive storm.
So much for the grand scale of things. At a more personal level Bose, a renowned biophysicist, believed that the meeting point between the physical, inorganic world and the world of the 'living' (scientific viewpoint!) was to be found in the action of electromagnetic waves. And so it appears to be. We are all connected at all levels of existence. Druids know that! I'm assuming that you mean Jagadish Chandra Bose here. Be specific. There is more than one "Bose" who did scientific work. This is not what he was looking at. He was looking at the possibility that plants used electricity, along with chemicals, to send signals from one part of a plant to another. This is a bit of a stretch to try and make it about "the meeting point between the physical, inorganic world and the world of the 'living'".

Air? and has organs dedicated to sensing electrical impulses both inside and outside the body. What organs? I guess you could say that we have our eyes, but that is about it. Acupuncture points are mini amplifiers set along the meridians, carrying micro volts of electrical current throughout the body. Whose acupuncture points? Whose meridians? Different systems use different layouts. But if these are real, shouldn't every system layout the acupuncture points and the meridians in the same locations? In the last decade or so, electrobiologists have learned a great deal about the effects of 'time varying electromagnetic fields' on living tissue (See the book 'The Body Electric') This book and this research seems seriously done. But taking what Becker is talking about and trying to stretch it to fit what you are talking about here is just too much. He's talking about how electrical differentials can affect chemical differentials and hence affect things like healing. The movement of our electrical make up creates motion and consequently magnetism and in turn our vibrational rate Vibrational rate of what? What is vibrating? And you can't say "energy".. Our hearts radiate electromagnetic signals - and carried on these signals is information. About how we're feeling, and thinking. How do you know this? If this is true, you should be able to simply measure the electrical signals from the heart and do some mind reading. But this doesn't occur. Why not? Thinking changes our vibration rate. Again, the vibration rate of what? What is vibrating? Every thought, every reaction, seems to produce an evoked electrical potential in the DC (direct current) system in the body, and is directly involved in every phase of mental activity. What DC system? And how do you know that it is changed by thoughts? The number of leaps here is astounding. And also, DC currents don't "vibrate", so why are they being introduced here? It changes the workings of our cells, and consequently, or DNA. Yes, we can change our DNA! If this is true, then please apply for the Nobel prize. This would be the biggest discovery in biology since we discovered DNA in the first place.
We usually conceive of electricity as something external to us. Not so! There is a form of electricity which is prevalent in every living thing - bioelectricity or Bioelectromagnetism referring to the electromagnetic fields produced by our cells! This is nothing new. Bioelectricity simply refers to the source of the electricity. Once it is produced, it is just electricity. As our thoughts are transmitted, the are picked up by others, and it has been shown that our thinking can and does effect others. One brain can send signals while another picks them up. Where has this been demonstrated? Again, please apply for a Nobel prize. When we find people 'difficult' we're out of sychronicity with them. Going 'head up' with someone, or having a 'heart to heart' are all clues to our state of thinking and emotional responses. Evidence now points to the heart playing a particularly important role in this with love, compassion and appreciation being associated with highly ordered coherent patterns of heart rhythms. The heart generates a series of electromagnetic pulses which create magnetic fields and consequently information broadcast to the body and to others externally. The interaction between two human beings exists at various levels - an energetic communication system operates just below the normal conscious level of awareness, contributing to the attraction or repulsion felt between unaware individuals. Whilst in a 'coherent' mode of love and compassion, people are more sensitive to receiving this information contained in the fields generated by others and it's been demonstrated that the EEG of one person can be detected by another during touch and physical contact with 'holding hands' being a prime example of people harmonising their bioelectric fields. Holding hands in a circle before spiritual work can be seen as those involved generating heart coherence and thus 'becoming one'! This entire section simply needs "Show me!". Where has any of this been demonstrated?
Recent findings show emotions such as love, care and appreciation are associated with increased physiological coherence and in turn the electromagnetic field radiated outside the body (the aura) becomes more organised. The heart rhythm entrainment between people is also found between owners and their pets. The heart's magnetic field acts as a carrier wave which affects the function of our cells, as well as other biological systems nearby. Hugging trees has a measurable effect! Any electromagnetic field produced by the body is unbelievably weak. Again, this has not been demonstrated to actually occur.
Measurements of electromagnetism is measured in hertz. (Hertz is a method of measuring cycles per second of wavelengths - just imagine standing on a shore watching the waves coming in: the faster they splash the higher the 'hertz'! The dominant frequency in all animals is approximately 10 hertz, Frequency of what? What is vibrating? Once that is answered, who has measured this? And how? showing that every creature is connected to the earth - and to each other - electromagnetically. The pineal gland in the head - the third eye - is responsive to the daily solar cycle, the monthly lunar cycle, and is involved in altering how we perceive the world. The only reference I can find is that the pineal gland is sensitive to the small amount of light which leaks through the back of the eyeballs. Again, nothing especially astonishing about this fact. Very small magnetic fields influence the pineal gland, depending on its orientation to earth's field. An Indian group have recently announced that the human EEG not only responds to micro pulsations of energy, but also responded differently depending on which way the head was facing in relation to earth's magnetic field. Here we have evidence of our knowledge of the importance of the four directions! Our biological processes are also affected by the orientation of our earth to that of the Milky Way. The interaction of the earth's geomagnetic field with that of the sun and the galactic centre can effect our chemistry. Based on what research? The rising of the galactic centre over the horizon has been shown to affect human intuition and psychic ability. According to who? Seeing between worlds is classed as 'electromagnetic hypersensitivity' and is acquired by some through a major electrical event (such as being close to a lightening strike, receiving a major electric shock etc) with the result in some seeing angels and guides, whilst others may experience 'alien abductions'. What is "seeing between worlds"? Isn't it much more likely that a massive electrical charge caused damage in the brain? Isn't that just a slightly more plausible explanation?
Interestingly, when the magnetic field around a human is reduced to approximately 0 hertz, then the third eye opens - and stone circles have been shown to resonate at about 0 hertz. 0Hz means that there is no electromagnetic energy. That is what 0 means. So nothing at all has such profound effects? Wow. I think this should be called homeopathic electromagnetism. Sacred sites including stone circles exhibit characteristics of magnetism, sound and harmonics. This sentence doesn't actually say anything. Every object in the universe has characteristics of magnetism, sound and harmonics. As well as color, and weight, and pretty much anything else. They also appear to contain certain frequencies not found in the human body - a part of our make up appears to be silent. Or perhaps dormant? And as these external energies grow, so too will we awaken further, causing a move in our evolution? How do you know this? Who measured this? What are these "missing frequencies"?
We are being challenged by this increasing energy. In his scientifically orientated books the "Science of Oneness" and "the Divine Cosmos" Wilcox looks for proof that an 'energetic transformational process' is under way including an experience of unity with All-that-Is in the fullest sense. It can give us the opportunity to extend our consciousness, and our interaction with our surroundings. Or confuse and frighten us. Shall humans have increasingly more 'between worlds' experiences? If so, those who are still held in the scientific reductionist viewpoint are in for a disturbing surprise! The name is actually David Wilcock. And I'm sorry, but this person does not know what he is talking about. I could write an entire book just trying to explain how wrong he is.
And these changes can be seen at the personal level - there's a report of a lady who planted a lemon tree and worked with it on a daily basis. This tree grew at a fast rate and produced many lemons each year: then the lady contracted cancer and shortly afterwards the tree stopped producing fruit. After she had passed the veil, a year later the lemon tree began producing flowers and fruit once again. Wow. A tree is cared for by a person and it does well. What a shock. Then the person stops caring for it, so the plant does poorly. Again what a shock. Then the plant adjusts to the new conditions and starts doing well again. Shock again. The only explanation has to be non-existent aura energy, of course. The transmitted electromagnetic patterns from trees somehow resonate with the circuitry of our brains, giving a feeling of peace and connectedness. The opposite can also be felt; I know of one archer who, whilst practicing in a forest (field archery) became so 'spooked' that he threw down his equipment and fled from the trees! The potential differential between the ground and the trunk of a tree produces a flow of electrical current, which in turn produces a magnetic field. This implies that every tree transmits electrical signals and therefore information. Signal does not equal information. Just because an electromagnetic field is being generated does not imply that it is carrying information. Does your fridge magnet talk to your fridge? Well, maybe you think it does. It can become very understandable that the older trees as befriended by druids in the past must have been so much more talkative than their nursery age counterparts of today! Do you not understand the basic lifecycle of trees? An eighty year old oak is an eighty year old oak, regardless of whether it is alive now or was alive thousands of years ago. Using phrases like "nursery age counterparts of today" just shows the complete lack of understanding of basic tree biology.

The interaction of the earth's geomagnetic field with that of the sun and the galactic centre can effect our chemistry. Based on what research? The rising of the galactic centre over the horizon has been shown to affect human intuition and psychic ability. According to who? Seeing between worlds is classed as 'electromagnetic hypersensitivity' and is acquired by some through a major electrical event (such as being close to a lightening strike, receiving a major electric shock etc) with the result in some seeing angels and guides, whilst others may experience 'alien abductions'. What is "seeing between worlds"? Isn't it much more likely that a massive electrical charge caused damage in the brain? Isn't that just a slightly more plausible explanation?
Interestingly, when the magnetic field around a human is reduced to approximately 0 hertz, then the third eye opens - and stone circles have been shown to resonate at about 0 hertz. 0Hz means that there is no electromagnetic energy. That is what 0 means. So nothing at all has such profound effects? Wow. I think this should be called homeopathic electromagnetism. Sacred sites including stone circles exhibit characteristics of magnetism, sound and harmonics. This sentence doesn't actually say anything. Every object in the universe has characteristics of magnetism, sound and harmonics. As well as color, and weight, and pretty much anything else. They also appear to contain certain frequencies not found in the human body - a part of our make up appears to be silent. Or perhaps dormant? And as these external energies grow, so too will we awaken further, causing a move in our evolution? How do you know this? Who measured this? What are these "missing frequencies"?
We are being challenged by this increasing energy. In his scientifically orientated books the "Science of Oneness" and "the Divine Cosmos" Wilcox looks for proof that an 'energetic transformational process' is under way including an experience of unity with All-that-Is in the fullest sense. It can give us the opportunity to extend our consciousness, and our interaction with our surroundings. Or confuse and frighten us. Shall humans have increasingly more 'between worlds' experiences? If so, those who are still held in the scientific reductionist viewpoint are in for a disturbing surprise! The name is actually David Wilcock. And I'm sorry, but this person does not know what he is talking about. I could write an entire book just trying to explain how wrong he is.
And these changes can be seen at the personal level - there's a report of a lady who planted a lemon tree and worked with it on a daily basis. This tree grew at a fast rate and produced many lemons each year: then the lady contracted cancer and shortly afterwards the tree stopped producing fruit. After she had passed the veil, a year later the lemon tree began producing flowers and fruit once again. Wow. A tree is cared for by a person and it does well. What a shock. Then the person stops caring for it, so the plant does poorly. Again what a shock. Then the plant adjusts to the new conditions and starts doing well again. Shock again. The only explanation has to be non-existent aura energy, of course. The transmitted electromagnetic patterns from trees somehow resonate with the circuitry of our brains, giving a feeling of peace and connectedness. The opposite can also be felt; I know of one archer who, whilst practicing in a forest (field archery) became so 'spooked' that he threw down his equipment and fled from the trees! The potential differential between the ground and the trunk of a tree produces a flow of electrical current, which in turn produces a magnetic field. This implies that every tree transmits electrical signals and therefore information. Signal does not equal information. Just because an electromagnetic field is being generated does not imply that it is carrying information. Does your fridge magnet talk to your fridge? Well, maybe you think it does. It can become very understandable that the older trees as befriended by druids in the past must have been so much more talkative than their nursery age counterparts of today! Do you not understand the basic lifecycle of trees? An eighty year old oak is an eighty year old oak, regardless of whether it is alive now or was alive thousands of years ago. Using phrases like "nursery age counterparts of today" just shows the complete lack of understanding of basic tree biology.

Most of this has been a rant of "Show me". Assertions are made, over and over again, of what would be miraculous events, and several of which would surely garner Nobel prize level publicity, and yet there is never any mention of where, or how, these miraculous events were observed. I don't want an explanation trying to tie in galactic, solar and planetary electromagnetic fields into my own personal aura. I just want a single, clear demonstration of any of the effects talked about. Once I see that, then we can start to try and figure out what is causing them.
